Reclaim control of your Defrag

Defragmenting your hard drive used to be a lot more informative, but now you don't even get a status bar
By gavomatic57 on Saturday, August 18, 2007

I don't think I'm alone in being hugely disappointed by the defragmentation tool within Vista.  In XP and the versions before it you would at least get a status bar and at best a graphical view of your hard drive blocks and you could watch as files were shuffled around.  Now you get a swirly thing that keeps going (usually for hours) without so much as a "I'll be done soon".  Its true that now defragmentation happens regularly and usually without your knowledge, but I don't know about you but I like a bit more control over my drives.

Well, you'll be pleased to know that MS have actually left some advanced functionality in there for us to find - via the command prompt (yes that DOS looking thing).

If you type CMD in the search box it'll bring up the command prompt in the search results.  Right click on the prompt and run it as an administrator (assuming you're allowed to by the system's owner) and type "defrag" in the box.

You'll end up with this:

From here you can choose how you want to defragment your drive.  For example, type Defrag -c -w to defrag all of your drives fully.

When its running, you'll see this:

A lot more informative than the usual defrag box isn't it!

I hear what your sayin, it was nice to know wht was happening, but seen as though for me, my schedule is set for 02:00 every friday morning then I don't really need to see it. I think why vista defrag is like that is they like things to look clean and not cluttered like you only have 1 desktop icon and 3 gadgets neatly in the sidebar when you first nstall and login to vista, but yeah, I hear what your saying

I never liked the vista defragger. Soon after I got Vista Business, I installed Diskeeper and haven't bothered with Vista's utility since then. Diskeeper does everything better than Vista's defragger. Fast manual defrags with progress indicator, and an excellent automatic mode should you choose to use it.

I've used Diskeeper for years, but on my Asus R1F it gets into a real mess when doing a defrag on the C: drive and fails to perform. Works fine on all other external drives though. So I've gone back to the Vista version. I agree though - would be good to see some indication of progress. Will try out this tip. Thanks.

Thanks

I did a defrag the other night for the first time. Didn't have a clue what it was up to!

I couldn't stand not seeing what was going on when I defragged my comp but at least when I don't manually defrag I don't have to look at the window.

I liked seeing graphical

view my hard drive blocks

and watch as my files were

shuffled around too. I wish

Microsoft would reinstall

with SP1

This is a good comment... The question is WHEN.. Have the "sources" intimated the likely timing of the proper (old XP style) defragmenter ??? JJR

Does defrag work at all in vista? It say it'd be done fron a few minutes to a few hours, but ther's never a time I lost patience and shut it up. I deserve to be informed of what's happening with my c.

i seem that vista's dosn't do the best job, as i have my machine to auto defrag every night at 1am. then every sunday i have windows live onecare do it's thing and it can't defrag all because the system is fragment to much and it alocates it for future defrag. so i now use IObit SmartDefrag beta 4.02 and everything is working fine. and this program is FREE.

Even easier is download auslogics defrag and use this. Looks like old defrag progs

Try Shampoo Magic Defrag. Brilliant - keeps your discs defragged continually and pauses when the comuyer is actually being used. I addition carries out a full defrag on a scheduled basis whenever you like.

unless you are writing lots of data to the disk
defrag is a waste of time. perhaps after writing
large ammounts 250 g once would make a slightly
noticable difference.the time wasted in hdd thrashing will take years to recoup . like screensavers and refresh rates for tft screens pointless..

I've been using JKDefrag (freeware) for several months, and the systems run more smoothly. Has lots of options or simply auto-run. My sister-in-law's laptop had files spread over 90% of the disc and the system'd take minutes to shut down on XP. Defragged and it's seconds to shut down now.

Wow, that's a nice artcle. However, I cheated, as I'm another who got a bit fed up with no "visuals". Actually, it's the same with burning files to CD. Nero makes that job easy and shows me everything that's happening. AusLogics defrags my drives via a simple software download that you can keep, but I love tinkering and may just have a look at the cmd 'thing' you've written about here. Great stuff.

Nice guide, I don't like Vista or XP defragg preferred the Win9X. I was lead to believe that XP / Vista didn't need defragging due to the advanced architecture

Your not alone in being dissapointed with Vistas dull looking defrag because it's the worst one yet.
I find Auslogics disk defrag to be the best one so far because you can see the progress and the apearence is cool.

Thanks for all the input. don

IT IS BETTER TO USE WINDOWS LIVE ONECARE TO DEFRAG BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING.

I HAVE VERSION 2.0 RUNNING ON VISTA ULTIMATE AND I HAVE FULL CONTROL OF THE SETTINGS.

This is a really good way of sorting you're drives every so often but it still takes abit to long and has the same problem of accessing data that is in use so i try-ed it from safe mode and found it to be substantially quicker, It defraged more of the drives content as windows was running the bare essentials in safe mode.
