Configure Vista to share audio/pictures/video files to Xbox 360

By deustwilight on 14 February 2007

To do this, you must have administrative rights.

To share these files so that you can see them:

  1. Click the Windows Icon, and go into the "Network and Sharing Center" in the Control Panel, or it's labeled "Network" if it's on the start menu.
  2. In "Sharing and Discovey" section, you'll notice "Media Sharing" at the bottom, click the arrow just to the right of that icon.
  3. Click "Change" and turn on you're Xbox 360.
  4. It should show the Xbox 360 on the network, if it does not, check your cable and router setup.
  5. When you do see it, make sure to allow it to be shared to.
  6. When it's been configured, go into Windows Media Player 11.
  7. Click under "Library" and click "Add to Library."
  8. Add all your audio/pictures/videos into your library, and check it out on your Xbox 360!
Note: You'll have to configure your Windows Media Center seperatly, almost in the same fashion.

I haven't gotten around to this quite yet. I know on XP Pro I had to run Zune software and had frequent network hiccups. I have the home premium so I am looking forward to some sweet media extender love...

Setting up the 360 on Vista is actually easier than you describe, also I am not begrudging your articles usefulness. All you have to do is have PC switched on then switch on 360. PC should detect it automatically and offer to set up the streaming. Follow the prompts and also the prompts on the 360. Job done.
